5 Kingsmead Road was formerly the home of Singapore pioneer artist Chen Wen Hsi (1906-1991). In 2000, it became the only private residence to be marked as a historic site under two categories by the National Heritage Board (NHB), specifically culture and community, and art.
About Us
For thirty-four years, from 1958 to 1991, this address served as Chen's creative sanctuary. Here, he combined Chinese art traditions with Western modernist influences and Southeast Asian themes. His garden teemed with animals that would later inspire his paintings, while his studio became a gathering place for young artists.
The jewels of this legacy are Chen's two abstract murals, painted between 1959 and the early 1960s. These monumental works showcase his bold experiments with Cubism and the Nanyang style—silent guardians of artistic vision that have witnessed over six decades of Singapore's cultural evolution.
Today, 5 Kingsmead Road has been reborn as Singapore's newest arts and culture heritage site, housing rotating exhibitions and collections while preserving Chen's irreplaceable legacy.
